Atwood Pilots Viva / Breast Cancer Research Foundation Ford Fusion to 18th in Yellow Transportation 300

Veteran returns to #27 car with top-twenty finish

Kansas City, KS (September 29, 2007) … It was a reunion of sorts at the Kansas Speedway for Casey Atwood. Atwood returned to the seat of the #27 Brewco Motorsports Ford Fusion for the Yellow Transportation 300, and drove the pink paint-schemed car to promote awareness and assist with raising funds for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF). The Yellow Transportation 300 was the first of three races for the BCRF pink paint scheme (Charlotte, October 12th and Memphis, October 27th).

Atwood had not driven the #27 Ford Fusion since last September at Richmond when he was named to pilot the #27 car for the final eight races of the 2006 season. Three of those eight races were behind the wheel of the Viva / BCRF pink paint scheme car promoting awareness to breast cancer. However, Atwood had not competed full-time on the Busch Series until last weekend at Dover when he drove the #37 Kick Butt Ford Fusion for Brewco. Needless to say, both the team and Atwood had high hopes for his return to the #27 Viva / BCRF Ford at Kansas.

After two practice sessions on Friday, Atwood drew the number 37 for qualifying on Saturday morning. The Nashville, Tennesse driver posted a fast lap of 31.871 seconds / 169.433 mph on the 1.5-mile Kansas Speedway to earn the 19th-starting position in the 43-car field.

At the start of the 200-lap, 300-mile race, Atwood established a smooth, competitive race pace. He described his car to Crew Chief Newt Moore as “wicked loose off the corners and a little tight in the center” by lap 20. When caution for debris waved on lap 33, Moore brought Atwood to pit road for tires, fuel, and a track bar adjustment to help with the handling issues. Atwood would restart 19th on lap 38, but quickly lost several positions on the track.

By lap 50, Atwood was running 26th and still experiencing a loose condition in the exit of the turns. On lap 80, the leader passed Atwood placing the Viva / BCRF Ford Fusion one lap down in 28th position. When caution waved on lap 88, Atwood would take this opportunity to pit for major adjustments. The Viva / BCRF crew took a rubber out of the left rear, made a major track bar adjustment, and closed the shocks in the rear. After also receiving four tires and fuel, Atwood would restart 31st on lap 95.

Two laps after the restart, Atwood did a great job of avoiding a major accident off turn two by driving the Viva / BCRF Ford low on the track. Atwood’s spotter provided major assistance that enabled him to miss this accident. On lap 107, Atwood made another trip to pit road for wedge and air pressure adjustments. Several laps after the restart, Atwood drove up to the 26th position and reported that his car was “still a little loose, but a lot better than it was earlier”.

Atwood would continue to run in the 24-26th positions for the next forty laps and battle several other drivers for the coveted “lucky dog” award when a caution was waved. The “lucky dog” is the first car one lap down to the leaders who receives his lap back at the next caution. Finally, on lap 176, the #88 spun in turn two and Atwood received the “lucky dog” award. He would restart in the 22nd position, the last car on the lead lap.

Atwood battled his way through slower traffic to gain one position in the next nine laps. After yet another caution, Atwood would restart 21st on lap 187. Driving with the determination that made him one of the most talented young drivers in NASCAR, Atwood raced his way to 18th in the final laps.

“My Viva / BCRF Ford got really loose early in the race, but Newt (Crew Chief Moore) and the guys kept working on it to get better throughout the race,” Atwood stated. “At one stage during the middle of the race, the car got better and I could get back on the throttle off the turns. I had one set of tires that just didn’t work as well as others and I had to ride it out till the next caution. While I certainly wanted to have a better run for Viva and BCRF, the crew battled all race and we came back to earn a hard-fought top twenty finish.”

The NASCAR Busch Series will have next weekend off before heading to the Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Concord, North Carolina for their next event, the Dollar General 300, on Friday, October 12th. Practice for the Busch Series begins at 1 p.m. ET on Thursday, October 11th, with qualifying set for 4:05 p.m. ET on Saturday. The 200-lap, 300-mile race is set for an 8:16 p.m. ET start on the 12th. Casey Atwood will be back aboard the pink #27 Viva / BCRF Ford Fusion for the Dollar General 300. ESPN2 will provide live television coverage, with the Performance Racing Network (PRN) and the Sirius NASCAR Channel 128 handling the radio broadcast.
