Biffle Leads Laps, Scores another Top-10 for Brewco’s No. 37 Cub Cadet Ford
Darlington, SC (May 13, 2007) – Greg Biffle led 19 laps Friday night at Darlington Raceway, en route to an eighth-place finish in the Diamond Hill Plywood 200 NASCAR Busch Series race. It was the third top-ten finish of 2007 for Biffle in Brewco Motorsports’ No. 37 Cub Cadet Ford Fusion.
The Brewco team was ready for qualifying Friday afternoon and Biffle guided the No. 37 Cub Cadet Ford to a solid third-place starting position. He reported early on in the race that the car was a bit tight and that it “needed to be down in the track better.” Biffle’s first opportunity to pit came on lap 24 when he was running in the third position. Crew Chief Newt Moore called for fuel and a four-tire change with air pressure adjustments. The Brewco crew completed a lightning-fast pit stop and returned Biffle to the track back in third place.
Biffle came over the radio in the second position on lap 34 to tell the team that the pit stop changes “really helped” the car. One lap later he became the race leader. After only a few more laps, Biffle was ahead of the second place car by more than 10 car-lengths and was posting the fastest lap times of any car on the track.
During a caution on lap 54, the Brewco Cub Cadet team pitted again for more fuel, tires and air pressure adjustments. However, many cars did not pit, and the No. 37 Cub Cadet Ford returned to the track in the 21st position. Biffle then began a slow and steady march back toward the front of the pack. On lap 62 he was in 17th place, by lap 73 he was in 13th, and by lap 82 he was back in the top-10, running in ninth place.
However, by lap 103 in the eighth position, Biffle began reporting loose conditions to Crew Chief Moore. The Brewco team pitted on lap 113 to work on the Cub Cadet Ford. Following the stop, several caution flags flew late in the race, leaving Biffle and the other lead lap cars to fight their way through lap traffic on each restart. The No. 37 Cub Cadet Ford ended the 147-lap race in the eighth position.
“Our Cub Cadet Ford was great all night, but we just needed to be down in the racetrack a bit more,” said Biffle at the end of the race. “The Brewco guys did an awesome job in the pits tonight and we all felt like we had a car that could win, but we just really got hung up in a lot of lap traffic on the late restarts.”
“We just didn’t catch any breaks during the race,” said Moore. “Overall though it was a great weekend. We practiced and qualified well and ran well in the race, and our guys did an exceptional job in the pits tonight.
“We have a lot of momentum going for us right now, but we’re all looking forward to the off weekend for a chance to recharge our batteries,” Moore said. “We’ll enjoy the time off, but we’re already getting ready for Charlotte and are looking for another strong performance there.”
In two weeks the Brewco team heads to Lowe’s Motor Speedway for the Carquest Auto Parts 300 on Saturday May 26. Jamie McMurray will be back behind the wheel of the No. 37 Ford. Television coverage of the race begins at 7:30 pm EST on ESPN2.
