Biffle Gives No. 37 Cub Cadet Ford Second Top-10 of 2007 with Sixth-Place Finish in Phoenix
Avondale, AZ (April 23, 2007) – Greg Biffle scored a top-ten finish in Brewco Motorsports’ No. 37 Cub Cadet Ford Fusion for the second time in 2007 with his sixth-place effort at Phoenix International Raceway.
For the second straight week in a row, the Brewco team got an early qualifying draw, which worked against them as the track got faster throughout the qualifying session. However, Biffle did manage a 15th place starting position for the Bashas’ Supermarkets 200 under the lights Friday night.
“It’s just too loose,” Biffle reported to crew chief Newt Moore almost immediately after the start of the race. Biffle lost several positions early on because of the loose racecar, but worked his way into the top-ten by lap 53. Biffle also told Moore that the car was a little free on the gas and he couldn’t turn as well as he wanted to into turns one and two. However, on the team’s first pit stop on lap 59, Biffle and Moore decided to make no changes to the car, except for a four tire change and some fuel.
“We decided to leave the car alone and see what it would do as the track changed,” said Moore.
The decision was a good one. Biffle quickly maneuvered the No. 37 Cub Cadet Ford into the eighth spot and the Brewco team pitted again on lap 95 for more tires, fuel and minor trackbar and air pressure adjustments.
Biffle skillfully missed a wreck on lap 101 and moved the Brewco Ford up to sixth place by lap 132, saying the car was “not too bad.”
By lap 164 Biffle was still running in the sixth position, but was beginning to report loose conditions on the No. 37 Cub Cadet Ford once again. The loose Brewco Ford turned tight by lap 185 of the 200-lap race, and Biffle hung on for the sixth-place finish.
“I got a run on the 60 there for fifth place, but I just couldn’t get as close as I wanted to,” Biffle said after the race. “We were coming on like mad, but just got slowed down by a lot of lap traffic and cautions.
“I really felt like if we had just a bit more time we could have gained a few positions and ended the race in the top five,” he said. “But with the competition the way it is in the Busch Series today, I’m certainly not complaining about a sixth-place finish. There were a lot of great cars out there in the race and it’s not easy to get a top-five these days.
“Our pit stops were awesome all night,” Biffle continued. “The Brewco guys gained spots for us every time we pitted. I was really happy with the Brewco team and the Cub Cadet Ford this weekend. It was a good one for us.”
“We’re actually a little disappointed that we didn’t get a higher finish,” said Moore. “We feel like Greg does: we thought we could have gotten a spot or two at the end there. But a sixth place finish is good. We moved up eight spots in the owner’s points race, which is a real positive for us as well. We’ll take this momentum into Talladega next weekend and work toward a win there.”
The No. 37 Brewco team heads to Talladega Superspeedway this weekend for the Aaron’s 312 on Saturday April 28. Jamie McMurray will be back behind the wheel of the Yard-Man Ford. Television coverage of the race begins at 2:30 pm EST on ABC.
