Career Weekend For McGilton At Salem
“Rookie-of-the-Year Leader Sits Third In Points Heading To Kansas”
SALEM, Indiana (Tuesday, April 24, 2007) - - Phillip McGilton’s first trip to Salem Speedway will be one he won’t soon forget. The Brewco Motorsports driver racked in a career best qualifying effort on Saturday before pulling together a personal best finish in the fourth ARCA RE/MAX Series event of the season Sunday afternoon.
The No. 47 SIPerformance Ford Fusion unloaded strong off the hauler and it showed during Saturday’s practice. McGilton turned in the ninth fastest time overall in the only practice session of the weekend and exceeded his practice time to post a sixth place qualifying effort.
Knowing he had a strong Brewco Motorsports prepared Ford Fusion, McGilton and his team were looking forward to the first of two races at the intimidating half-mile short track this season.
At the start of the event, McGilton maintained patience. The Marion, Illinois native he needed to take him time working through the diverse field, keeping his fenders on his SIPerformance machine.
When the first caution flag waived, McGilton sat sixth in the midst of an intense battle with Billy Venturini. On the restart, McGilton held his ground and maintained a known presence inside the top-10.
While unable to fight for the lead at the time of the first and only round of pit stops, the Brewco Motorsports team stepped up and bolted four new Hoosier tires, added Sunoco Racing fuel before sending the leading Rookie-of-the-Year candidate back into competition locking the fifth position.
McGilton maintained that position for much of the second half of the 200-lap event. With the checkered flag insight, the competition picked up. McGilton battled tooth-and-nail hoping to maintain the fifth position but Brett Hudson and James Buescher were able to overtake the rookie driver forcing McGilton to cross the line seventh, a career best finish in only his 10th ARCA start.
“It was a great day,” said McGilton. “Our car was really good all day long. I am really proud of the Brewco Motorsports team for their efforts from the car to the pit stops they were flawless. It’s a good feeling to have another good finish under our belts as we head to Kansas Speedway next weekend, I’m pumped.”
With his exceptional finish on Sunday, McGilton leaps to third in ARCA RE/MAX Series driver’s points, just a mere 15 points off second place contender Frank Kimmel and 75 markers off current leader Justin Allgaier.
The Brewco Motorsports team will participate in a private test at Kentucky Speedway this Tuesday to prepare for the first of two events at the Sparta, Kentucky based track set to begin next month.
Next up for the ARCA RE/MAX Series is the trip out West to Kansas Speedway for the running of the Kansas Lottery $150 this Friday, April 27 with live coverage on the SPEED channel beginning at 5:00pm Eastern Time.
