Schrader's Brewco Motorsports Debut Foiled by Tire Issues
Duraflame/Yard-Man Ford Team Fights Back to Finish 36th
Daytona Beach, FL (Feb. 20, 2006) - Fast times in both NASCAR Busch Series practice sessions had Ken Schrader and the No. 66 Duraflame/Yard-Man Ford team optimistic heading in to Saturday’s Hershey’s Kissables 300 at Daytona International Speedway. Schrader posted the fourth fastest speed in first practice and was seventh fastest in final practice. Schrader’s day got off to a rough start, however, when the Duraflame/Yard-Man Ford cut a tire on lap three and wound up finishing 36th.
SpeedWeeks started great for Brewco Motorsports’ No. 66 team. After drafting well and posting top-10 times in both practice sessions, Schrader felt the car was “right where it should be” for the race. Schrader qualified 29th but the team was confident that in the draft, the Duraflame/Yard-Man Ford would quickly be up front.
Just three laps into the Hershey’s Kissables 300, the Duraflame/Yard Man Ford cut a left rear tire and suffered damage that forced the No. 66 team into the garage for 20 laps. After returning to the track in 43rd place, Schrader reported that the car was “a bit tighter but not too bad.” That all changed, however, when Schrader radioed that the water temperature had jumped to 240 degrees.
After pulling tape off the grill on lap 31, the temperature issue appeared to have been resolved. Multiple cautions allowed the Duraflame/Yard-Man Ford to gain a few positions, running as high as 35th by lap 75. Overheating again became a problem on lap 85 when Schrader reported the temperature had jumped to 255 degrees. Persistence was the key as the team attempted to cool the car down seven times in the final 35 laps. When the checkered flag flew, the Duraflame/Yard-Man Ford was shown 31 laps down in 36th place.
“It wasn’t the day we were hoping for,” said crew chief Newt Moore. “We had a fast car. This Duraflame/Yard-Man Ford Fusion ran great in practice and I thought we would be up front come Saturday. I have to give these Brewco Motorsports guys a lot of credit for working hard all day and not giving up. I’m excited to go to California next week and put together the kind of run I know this team can have.”
The next outing for Brewco Motorsports and the No. 66 team is Saturday, February 25th at the Stater Bros 300 at California Speedway with Scott Wimmer behind the wheel. Schrader returns to the No. 66 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on March 11.
