Atwood Scores Fifth-Straight Top 20 Finish with 18th Place Effort in Texas
Fort Worth, TX (November 6, 2006) – Casey Atwood and the No. 27 Brewco Motorsports crew fought a loose racecar most of the afternoon, but managed to score their fifth straight top-20 finish this weekend with an 18th place effort in the O’Reilly Challenge at Texas Motor Speedway.
Atwood qualified the No. 27 Scott Towels® Ford Fusion in the 16th position. Right from the start of the race, Atwood reported to Crew Chief Stewart Cooper that the car was loose.
“I was losing the nose bad in the corner,” Atwood said. “We were good in turns three and four, but I just couldn’t get in the gas off turn two and it was hurting us.”
Cooper called Atwood into the pits early and often to work on the loose condition. After a lap 70 pit stop for four tires with air pressure adjustments and wedge and trackbar adjustments, Atwood reported that the car was not as loose, but work was still needed. The No. 27 Scott Towels® Ford Fusion was running in the 28th position when Atwood pitted again on lap 142 for additional changes. Just 18 laps later he reported back to the Brewco crew that the car was the best it had been all day. Atwood began moving through the field and was in 22nd by lap 174. The No. 27 Scott Towels® Ford Fusion finished the race in the 18th position.
“In the race the car did some things we didn’t see in practice,” Atwood said. “Stewart and the guys did a great job working on the adjustments, and we eventually got the car dialed-in, but it was too late for us to make a charge toward the front.
“I think we learned this weekend that we need to make some longer runs in practice and get a feel for all the scenarios we might encounter during the race,” Atwood continued. “This will help us at Phoenix, which is one of my favorite tracks. I’m really looking forward to getting back there, after having sat on the pole there in a Cup car in 2001.”
Next for the No. 27 Brewco team will be the Arizona.Travel 200 at Phoenix International Raceway on Saturday, November 11. Television coverage of the event begins at 3:30 pm EST on TNT.
