Watkins Glen, NY (August 14, 2006) – In their last race together for 2006, Greg Biffle and Brewco Motorsports’ Cub Cadet Racing team faced and overcame two large obstacles this weekend en route to a season-best 4th place finish at Watkins Glen International.
Biffle said the Cub Cadet Ford was “plowing tight” and “not turning a lick” during first practice. Between practices, the Brewco Motorsports crew worked feverishly changing what crew chief Newt Moore called “everything including the kitchen sink.” Their efforts paid off and Biffle ended up 7th fastest in final practice.
Biffle qualified 12th but had to start from the rear of the field after the crew was forced to make unapproved impound adjustments to repair damage the Cub Cadet Ford suffered during qualifying. The Cub Cadet Ford rolled off in last place but would not stay there for long.
Biffle was up to 15th just 10 laps into the Zippo 200. Green flag pit stops began to cycle through but crew chief Newt Moore made the call to stay out until the leaders stopped to gain track position. Biffle was 5th when he stopped for four tires on lap 19. After the stop, the Cub Cadet Ford started getting “real loose on the left hand turns.” The caution flew on lap 30 but Biffle stayed out and restarted 13th.
The Cub Cadet Ford was up to 4th when another round of green flag pit stops began. Biffle came in on lap 49 for wedge and air pressure adjustments and four tires. The Cub Cadet Ford was seen in 9th on lap 53 when he tangled with Scott Pruett. Biffle spun but managed to gain two spots during the incident.
The Cub Cadet Ford got “tight through the esses” following the spin. With just 22 laps remaining, there were no more pit stops scheduled for the day. Biffle held on to the tight car and went on to finish 4th; giving Brewco Motorsports its first top-five of 2006.
“It was a strong race for us,” said Biffle. “Top-fives are always good. With about 25 to go I thought I had the speed to catch the leaders but the Cub Cadet Ford got tight there at the end and I just didn’t have anything for them. I wish I could’ve gone to victory lane with Newt Moore and these Brewco Motorsports guys this season but it wasn’t in the cards. I had a lot of fun in these four races and this was a good way to end.”
