Green, No. 27 Huggies® CleanTeam Ford finish 20th in Fontana
Fontana, CA (Feb. 27, 2006) – For the second straight week, the No. 27 Huggies® CleanTeam Ford Fusion fielded by Brewco Motorsports started the weekend behind the eight-ball, after the primary car was involved in an accident in practice, forcing the team to use the backup car. Faced with this early setback, both the Brewco crew and driver David Green stepped up to meet the challenge and turned what could have been a disastrous weekend into a 20th place finish in the Stater Bros. 300 at California Speedway.
Green, who was the victim of an accident in a practice session at Daytona International Speedway last week, was involved in an accident during the first practice session on Friday morning in Fontana, California. The No. 27 crew scrambled to prepare the back-up car and got it ready in time for the afternoon practice session. In the season opener in Daytona, the Brewco team’s back-up car suffered a host of mechanical issues to finish the race in 37th place and 43 laps down. In California however, the results were much better.
The Huggies® CleanTeam Ford Fusion qualified well and started the race in ninth place. Green had moved up to eighth when the Brewco team made its first pit stop following a caution on lap 18 for four tires and air pressure adjustments. However, Green reported that the adjustments made the car loose – a condition that would plague the car all afternoon. Crew Chief Stewart Cooper and his team worked all afternoon to adjust the grip. Late in the race, trackbar adjustments and more adjustments to the air pressure seemed to get the car dialed-in, but the team ended the race in 20th place, one lap down.
“It was another disappointing start to our weekend, after crashing my primary car in the first 15 minutes of practice,” said Green, “but Stewart and the guys quickly got our back-up car prepared.
“The team worked hard and we got the most out of that second practice. The qualifying package was pretty darn good. With the track being very hot, my car’s balance was very good and we were able to put down a very nice qualifying run.
“Our first run in the race was very good, but after the first pit stop the car had no grip at all it seemed,” Green said. “Our put crew did a good job on pit road – a very solid performance there – and we tried several things, but to no avail. So for now, we’ll evaluate what the new Goodyear tires are showing us, as far as what the tire wants and what the car wants. We’ll make adjustments accordingly for the Las Vegas race and beyond.”
The Brewco Motorsports No. 27 car heads to Mexico City next week for the Telcel Motorola 200 at the Audtodromo Hermanos Rodriguez road course. In last year’s race, which was the first Busch Series race to be run at the facility, Green and the Kleenex racing team finished 39th after transmission problems. Prior to the troubles however, the No. 27 car qualified 11th and ran in the top 10 much of the race.
The team will return to its Kleenex paint scheme for Sunday’s race.
