David Green, No. 27 Brewco Pull-Ups® Team Score Top-15 Finish at Lowe’s
Concord, NC (May 29, 2006) – The heat was definitely on this weekend in Charlotte, with temperatures in the low 90s. While fans and teams alike struggled to keep cool, David Green and his Brewco Motorsports team also struggled to keep the temperature down in No. 27 Pull-Ups® Ford Fusion. The team persevered through overheating and track position issues on their way to a 14th place finish in the CARQUEST Auto Parts 300 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway Saturday night.
The race at Lowe’s marked the first event that co-crew chiefs Stewart Cooper and Shawn Parker worked together.
“Our Charlotte test results were not what we were looking for,” said Green of the crew’s testing session in early May. “Stewart and the guys went back to the shop to work on getting more front grip in our Ford Fusion and they did a great job in the two weeks prior to race weekend. Along with that, having Shawn coming over to our No. 27 Ford added depth to our race team.”
The team dedicated the first practice session of the Charlotte weekend to scuffing tires and used the final practice session to tweak the car that was tuned post-test.
“Shawn and Stewart got together and made some changes that we all thought would help both in qualifying and the race,” Green said. “All of the changes were right on.”
Green qualified the car in the 24th position on Thursday night. With brother Mark Green atop the spotter’s stand, David Green readied for the start of the race on Saturday night. Problems started early, as on the first few laps Green commented that the car needed rear grip. Co-Crew Chief Parker reminded him to not overdrive the corners and keep heat in the tires.
Then an issue surfaced that was out of the control of both driver and team. A piece of plastic on the grill led the No. 27 Brewco car’s water temperature to skyrocket. After Green reported a temperature of 280 degrees, Co-Crew Chief Parker told Green to pit. Fortunately Green was able to pit under caution, and the Brewco team took the necessary time to cool down the car and remove the plastic from the grill. The crew would pit again a few laps later under caution for fuel and a trackbar adjustment.
Around lap 64, Green was lapped by the lead cars and reported that the front of the car “had gone away.” Parker and Cooper worked on the car’s setup all night, and the team worked hard to earn the “lucky dog,” getting back on the lead lap after a caution on lap 156.
“After a few changes on the first few pit stops to get some rear grip in the car, the Brewco team made my car even more competitive and a blast to drive the rest of the night,” Green said. “The overheating issues from earlier in the night led to our losing a cylinder with 10 laps to go. With two laps to go, we lost a second cylinder and lost a lot of speed, ultimately costing us a top-ten finish. The Yates/Roush engines have been awesome for us all year. What happened Saturday night was a freak thing, with the plastic on the grill.”
Green, Cooper and the entire No. 27 team are looking forward to Dover.
“I can’t say enough about how proud I am of the whole team and their efforts after the test, working to figure out what our car wanted for the hard Goodyear tire we ran,” Green said. “Yes we finished 14th but we were a top-10 car. I really feel like we are turning the corner in getting a hold of this tire. With that, and with Stewart and Shawn putting their knowledge and abilities together, we can continually unload like we did this weekend. This will give us more time to tweak our car and dial-it-in to be a top-10 car each week. Then we will work on becoming a top-five team and challenge for some wins. Thanks to their hard work, the Brewco crew made this race the most fun I’ve had racing in Charlotte in a few years. We’ll use the momentum from this weekend and go get ‘em in Dover.”
“Shawn and I worked well together, as we have all season,” said Cooper. “We’ve just collaborated more behind the scenes up to this point, but it was good for the team and for David to have both Shawn and I on top of the pit box this weekend.
“We’ve got a lot of momentum right now, with three top-15 finishes in our last five races,” Cooper continued. “We’re not 100 percent happy with our results, because we know we’re capable of better, but after the tough start we had to the season, it’s good to see us progress as a team. I’m looking forward to some wins and strong finishes in the remainder of 2006.”
Next for the No. 27 Brewco team will be the StonebridgeRacing.com 200 at Dover International Speedway on Saturday June 3. Television coverage begins at 3:30 pm on FX.
