David Green, No. 27 Pull-Ups® Team Finish 24th in Darlington
Darlington, SC (May 15, 2006) – Following a solid twelfth-place finish last week at Richmond International Raceway, David Green and the No. 27 Brewco Ford crew were fired-up for the Diamond Hill Plywood 200 at Darlington Raceway. However, the Lady in Black had other plans for the team, as they struggled to keep up with changing track conditions, on their way to a 24th place finish in under the lights Friday night.
The No. 27 Brewco crew had traveled from Richmond to Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Charlotte for testing, then straight to Darlington for the race. The Ford Fusion featured a special paint scheme for the weekend in Darlington, with Kimberly-Clark’s Pull-Ups® brand on the hood of the car.
“With some valuable momentum coming off our Richmond race, I was excited about getting to Darlington - a track that I really enjoy to race on,” said Green. “As we unloaded, I was excited that we ran a decent practice lap right off the truck. As we got to running however, our car seemed to slide the front tires, and in trying to fix that, the car lost rear grip – a very challenging issue at Darlington.”
The team qualified for the race in 33rd place, and knew they had their work cut out for them.
“As the race started, immediately the car was big time tight,” Green said. “We were sliding the front tires through the center and on exit.”
Crew Chief Stewart Cooper called for Green to pit on lap nine for the necessary adjustments, including four new tires.
“The car was better, but after a few laps it lost rear grip and was sliding the rear tires,” Green said. “It seemed like the rest of the night we could never get the grip back. With the abrasiveness of Darlington, that’s the worst case scenario to try to fix throughout the race.”
Green also avoided a wreck early in the race, narrowly missing contact with the No. 88 car on lap 47. Cooper kept reminding Green throughout the race to “race the racetrack,” but he and the Brewco crew struggled with the car’s setup throughout the event.
“We probably should have finish 35th considering the issues we had with the Brewco Ford all night,” said Cooper. “But as I’ve said before, it’s a testament to how hard this entire team works, and how we deal with adversity, learn, and prepare for the next race.”
“I have to thank Stewart and the guys for all their hard work and for never giving up during the race,” said Green. “It was a very tough and frustrating day for all of us, but on the bright side we gained another spot in the overall point standings. We’ll keep digging and working hard on getting our performance back to where it should be.
“Also, thanks to everyone at Kimberly-Clark and the Pull-Ups® brand for giving us a cool looking car,” said Green. “Our whole team is looking forward to getting the Pull-Ups® Ford Fusion in Victory Lane soon.”
The NASCAR Busch Series is off this weekend. The next race will be the CarQuest Auto Parts 300 at Lowe's Motor Speedway on Saturday May 27. Television coverage begins at 7:30 pm on FX.
