David Green, No. 27 Scott Towels® Brewco Team Overcome Loose Conditions, Heat for Top-25 Finish
Daytona Beach, FL (July 3, 2006) – David Green and the No. 27 Brewco Motorsports team battled with the heat, poor track position, and a loose racecar Friday night, but still managed to score a 23rd place finish under the lights in the Winn Dixie 250 at Daytona International Speedway.
The heat played a factor in the No. 27 Scott Towels® Ford Fusion team’s performance from the first practice to the end of the race.
“Wow, what an odd weekend at Daytona, with the tire situation and obviously the heat,” said Green. “Over all the years I’ve raced there, I’ve never seen the track be as slippery and unpredictable as it was all last weekend.”
The No. 27 Ford Fusion started the race deep in the field, having qualified in the 37th position. As did many competitors that night, Green and his Brewco team fought loose conditions all race long.
“After our first two laps on the track, my car had no grip in either the front or rear,” Green said. “It didn't matter if the tires were brand new or 50 laps old. With the right side tires being the tires we run at Talladega, we all thought it would just be a little bit tougher of a tire, but boy was it TOUGH! There was no side bite and no rear grip, which led to no turning ability through the center and exit, plus there was no rear grip on exit.
“With all that being said however, it was a race where you could pass people California/Vegas/Phoenix-style,” Green said. “You could get under them when they couldn’t get to throttle as well as you could. The problem for us during the race was that I couldn't get the car to do what I needed to do - it would just slide all over track. I felt like I was racing on slippery wet grass all night.”
Green was able to avoid being caught up in the many accidents of the evening and the No. 27 Brewco team, under the leadership of Co-Crew Chief Stewart Cooper, made several quick pit stops to fine-tune the car.
“I’ve never seen spread-out racing here at Daytona like we had on Saturday,” said Cooper. “We learned a lot at our recent tire test here, but the heat and racing conditions made it difficult to use that information, and to get our adjustments just right so we could get the car where it needed to be.”
“I’m proud of Stewart and the guys for never giving up and trying tons of things with the car all night long,” Green said. “One positive is that we were able to be smart and stay clean throughout the race and gain two spots in the points. More importantly, we learned quite a bit for our future restrictor plate races, no matter what tire we run on. We'll take what our chassis and aero showed us, and use the information to be stronger next year.”
Next for the No. 27 Brewco team will be the USG Durock 300 at Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet, Illinois, on Saturday July 8. Television coverage of the race begins at 4 pm EST on TNT.
