Daytona doldrums lead to 37th place finish for Green, No. 27 team
Daytona Beach, FL (Feb. 20, 2006) - The first race of the 2006 NASCAR Busch Series season proved to be a difficult one for David Green and the No. 27 Huggies® CleanTeam Ford Fusion fielded by Brewco Motorsports.
Problems started even before the green flag of the 120-lap Hershey’s Kissables 300 on Saturday. The primary car was involved in an accident with the No. 90 car driven by Elliott Sadler and No. 22 driven by Kenny Wallace during the first Busch Series Daytona practice session. The No. 27 crew worked furiously to prepare the back-up Huggies® CleanTeam Ford Fusion for the race on Saturday. However during the race itself, the team suffered a series of setbacks, which included difficulties with the gearbox (lap 30), the radiator (lap 50), and a left rear tire (lap 103). Near heroic efforts by the Brewco crew quickly addressed all of the issues, as they made many of the changes in the garage area. However, despite their efforts, the No. 27 team ended the race 39 laps down in 37th place.
Crew chief Stewart Cooper was discouraged at the outcome, but took a long-range view on the start to team’s season.
“I mean, how much can happen in one race?” Cooper asked. “It’s just hard to believe, but really it’s how we rebound from this that’s going to make the difference. I am confident in our Brewco Motorsports team and confident that we will have a successful season.”
Green echoed Cooper’s sentiments and also looked to future races.
“This is obviously NOT the way we wanted the season to start,” he said. “But we can’t control mechanical problems. Unfortunately we never even got the chance to get the first 30 laps in the books without issues. The great thing is that our winter testing with the primary car was really good, so despite our problems, I’m excited about the things we learned with the new Ford Fusion for the upcoming Talladega and July Daytona races.”
“We all know it’s 35 races that make up the season. In just a few short days, we’ll be on the track in California going for a win. We’ll keep our heads up high and do our job in Fontana on Saturday.”
The Brewco Motorsports No. 27 team heads to Fontana next week for the Stater Bros. 300 where over nine races, Green has posted two top-tens and a top-five finish. The team will again run the special Huggies® CleanTeam paint scheme for the race.
