Ill-Timed Caution Foils Strong Finish for David Green, No. 27 Brewco Kleenex® Team
Fort Mitchell, KY (June 19, 2006) – The yellow flag flew at the wrong time for driver David Green and the No. 27 Kleenex® Ford Fusion Saturday night at Kentucky Speedway. After being caught on pit road during a caution, what looked like a top-five finish ended up a 21st place run for Green and the Brewco Motorsports team.
The weekend started out on a very positive note for the No. 27 team, with two strong practice sessions on Friday.
“(Co-Crew Chief) Stewart (Cooper) and the guys did an awesome job with my car at the shop,” Green said. “We were able to unload at the top of the sheets throughout practice. We had the best two hours of practice that we've had all year, which allowed us to really tune the car.”
Green qualified the Kleenex® Ford in the 12th position and he and his teammates were looking forward to a strong run at their hometown track. With brother Mark Green spotting and Co-Crew Chief Shawn Parker atop the pit box, Green was ready to make his way through the field.
“At the start of the race, my car was just like it was in Friday’s practice - very consistent and fast,” Green said. “After our first pit stop, we had to use sticker tires which threw the car’s balance off just a bit in the short run. However in the long runs, we were one of the three fastest cars on the track.”
By lap 109, Green and the Brewco team were in the top-ten. Then, misfortune struck on lap 118 when Parker called Green into the pits. The caution flag flew for a spin in the backstretch and Green was caught on pit road, putting the No. 27 Ford two laps down.
“We really had no choice but to pit there,” Parker said. “We were one of the fastest cars on the racetrack, but we can’t control when the yellow flags come out. Our pit strategy just didn’t work out for us.”
“There is no question we had a top-five car Saturday night,” Green said. “It was a great job by our guys - not the finish we deserved, but the other guys knew we were there, that’s for sure!”
“I'm proud of team for preparing a great car and having a fun day Friday preparing for our race. I'm excited and can't wait until we get to Milwaukee. There we can use the things we learned in the Friday practice sessions in Kentucky. Those things will help us tremendously at each of the remaining races this season.”
Next for the No. 27 Brewco team will be the AT&T 250 at The Milwaukee Mile on Saturday June 24. Television coverage of the race begins at 9 pm EST on FX.
