Transmission issues halt promising day for Brewco Kleenex® team in Mexico City

Stewart and David in MexicoMexico City, Mexico (March 7, 2006) – A change of scenery - specifically a trip outside the United States - did nothing to help the luck of the No. 27 Kleenex® Ford Fusion team fielded by Brewco Motorsports. Mechanical issues plagued the team south of the border and led to a 35th place finish in the Telcel-Motorola 200 presented by Banamex.

The No. 27 car suffered transmission problems and returned to the garage for repairs on lap 18 of the 80-lap race at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in Mexico City, Mexico, on Sunday. The Brewco team replaced the transmission and returned to the track on lap 31, but the car immediately experienced additional mechanical issues, and returned to the garage one lap later. Several cautions worked in the team’s favor, and the repairs were made quickly enough to get the Kleenex® Ford back out on the track by lap 37. By that point however, the No. 27 was in 42nd place, 16 laps down. The team finished the race the same number of laps down, in 35th place.

“It was an extremely disappointing weekend,” said Green. “We suffered the same transmission problems that we did last year. Our goal this year was to be conservative and play it smart for the first 60 laps to put ourselves in a position to go for broke the last 20 laps. That all went out the window with the transmission failure.

Pit stop in Mexico“Once we got back on track, we had to go back behind the wall to fix other issues that continued to put us laps down. Prior to the transmission issue and after our garage visit however, the chassis performed well and we seemed to make our car do some things we needed it to do to be competitive.”

The Brewco Motorsports No. 27 car heads to Las Vegas on Saturday for the Sam’s Town 300 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Last year Green and the Kleenex racing team qualified in 13th place and finished in tenth. Two Kimberly-Clark brands - Depend® and Poise® Products - will be featured on the car in Vegas.
