David Green, Brewco No. 27 team score top-10 with Ravenswood Ford
Avondale, Arizona (April 24, 2006) – For much of the 2006 season, the No. 27 Brewco Motorsports Busch Series Ford has been the victim of poor luck, leading to finishes that the crew and driver knew were not reflective of their talent and skill. This weekend at Phoenix International Raceway, the Brewco team and driver David Green turned in a solid performance – and had luck on their side – to finish the Bashas’ Supermarkets 200 in ninth place.
Green was the highest finishing Busch Series regular in the race, and the only one in the top ten. The ninth place finish was the highest of the season for the Brewco crew, and the team’s first top-ten of the year.
“This was big for us,” said Crew Chief Stewart Cooper. “Everyone on the team did a great job this weekend and we had great pit stops. We’ll carry the momentum from this race into our upcoming races, and we know this is the first of many top-ten finishes for our team in 2006.”
“Wow, finally a weekend that went flawlessly, without any issues,” said Green. “The car unloaded fast just like it did in Nashville and we were able to fine tune it throughout the rest of our practice. When we’re able to do that, it sure makes our practice and overall game plan a lot clearer, as far as what we need to do to make our car faster and make it a winning car.”
In Friday night’s race the No. 27 car was sponsored by Ravenswood Winery, the company’s first NASCAR team sponsorship. Ravenswood will also be the primary sponsor for the No. 27 Brewco car in the Zippo 200 at Watkins Glen International Speedway on August 12 and the Food City 250 at Bristol Motor Speedway on August 25.
“I’m very proud to bring Ravenswood Winery into their first NASCAR race and score a solid top ten finish for them,” said Green. “Thanks to Ravenswood, as well as all of our other sponsors, including Kleenex®, SCOTT Towels®, Cottonelle®, Ford, and The United States Postal Service for all their support.”
Green was able to avoid a number of accidents on his way to the ninth-place finish. The No. 27 Brewco team started the race in 17th place. After fighting loose conditions early on, Green made his first pit stop on lap 84, getting four tires and fuel. The No. 27 team pitted again ten laps later during a caution to top-off with fuel and change tires for later track position. Green narrowly avoided a wreck on lap 173 and on lap 184, another spin by cars in front of Green almost collected the Brewco car, but he skillfully avoided the wreck. Finally on lap 198, Green was just in front of an accident involving several cars. The race ended on a green-white checkered finish and Green, who was running in the eighth position, was passed on the last lap by the No. 42 car which had fresher tires.
“Our car was flawless all night,” said Green. “On the first run, we were loose, but fast, so we were careful not to over adjust the car. I really felt like our car was a top five car, but with all the late race cautions, we never could get a long run like we really needed. Being the highest finishing Busch Series regular is a huge compliment for my team and me.
“We finally feel like we might have shaken the gorilla off our shoulders,” Green continued. “I’m very proud of Stewart and the Brewco crew after so many little things have been biting us so far this season. Championship teams are made up of guys that never give up and continue to learn from prior races. Stewart and my guys are a championship team and hopefully from this race forward we can show’ em we are for real.”
For his performance, Green earned the Goody’s Headache Powder Extra Strength Award and the Mobil 1 Command Performance Driver of the Race award.
On Saturday the No. 27 Brewco team returns to its Kimberly-Clark paint scheme, and Kleenex® will be featured on the car for the Aaron’s 312 at Talladega Superspeedway.
