David Green, Brewco Kleenex® team finish 24th in Talladega
Will use info from race, Daytona tire test to strengthen 2006 performance
Talladega, Alabama (May 1, 2006) - This Saturday at Talladega Superspeedway, David Green and the No. 27 Brewco Motorsports Kleenex® team brought a fast car and avoided the wrecks to orchestrate a 24th place finish in the Aaron’s 312.
The Brewco team brought a brand new racecar to Talladega and things were looking promising early on, as Green was fastest in the first practice session of the weekend.
“The car rolled off the truck very good and very fast - by far the best we’ve ever unloaded at a restrictor plate track,” Green said. “(Crew Chief) Stewart (Cooper) and the guys worked their tails off after Daytona, getting this car faster and more competitive.”
The car qualified well – in 11th place - leading Green to comment that it was “probably the fastest Brewco car we have ever brought here.”
“Both in qualifying trim and race trim the car had awesome speed,” said Green. “We went out early, and if we would have gone out later - with cooler conditions - we would have been a solid top-five car. It was a real plus over the last few restrictor plate qualifying runs for us – just a great job by my guys.
“At the end of practice I was really happy with our car,” Green said, “but I was still a bit concerned about what the front grip would be like in the long run.”
At the beginning of the race, Green commented to the No. 27 crew that the car was loose in the nose, an issue that the team would combat throughout the race. The loose condition was made worse by the strong winds present at the track on Saturday. Green mentioned to the team that early on, his goal was to be careful and try to avoid any accidents.
The Kleenex® team pitted for four tires and fuel on lap 45. A caution involving the No. 33 and 50 cars happened on lap 66, where Green said he took “evasive action” to avoid being caught up in the wreck. The Brewco team worked on the ensuing pit stop to give Green the grip he was asking for, and came down pit road several times to pack the No. 27 Ford with fuel, in hopes of winning the track position battle in the race.
By lap 94, Green was in the 16th position on the lead lap, and once again commented that the car was “starting to lose the nose pretty badly.” The team pitted on lap 100 to work on the loose condition, and after a late caution, the race ended on lap 117. The No. 27 Kleenex® Ford ended the race in the 24th position.
“My plan was to be there at the end with all four fenders on our Ford Fusion,” he said. “As the race went on it seemed to lose the front-end on the exits of the corners. We made a few adjustments but none really helped and we just could not get a lane that complimented my car.
“It’s a very disappointing finish to a weekend that looked so promising from the start of practice,” Green said. “I’m proud of my team for building a very fast car. We’ll go to work on getting our handling package better and go get ‘em in Daytona. We know what we need to do differently from what the end of practice and the race showed us. We now have a fast car and we’ll put this towards our Daytona car.”
Green was the recipient of the Goody’s Headache Powder Award in the race.
The Aaron’s 312 was race number 10 of the season and the No. 27 Brewco team is currently 24th in the Busch Series championship point standings.
“Obviously we’re not where we want to be in terms of the points situation,” said Cooper. “But we’re learning more every week. We were happy with what we learned from the new superspeedway car we ran in Talladega, and we gathered more good tire information during our Goodyear tire test in Daytona on May 1. We’re really looking forward to putting the new info to use, and looking ahead to success in Richmond and beyond.”
The next race for the No. 27 Kleenex® Ford will be the Circuit City 250 presented by Funai on Friday May 5, 2006 at Richmond Int’l. Raceway. Television coverage begins at 8 pm on FX.
