Strong qualifying position, finish in Texas encourage David Green, No. 27 Brewco Kleenex® team

David Green in TexasFort Worth, Texas (April 10, 2006) – Even before the end of the O’Reilly 300 this weekend, Stewart Cooper, crew chief of the No. 27 Kleenex® Ford, was looking forward to a tire test during the second week of May at Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Charlotte. Cooper was encouraged by the progress the team was making this season, and couldn’t wait to gather more data. Even as he, his Brewco Motorsports crew, and driver David Green looked ahead, this Saturday the team put together a strong qualifying effort and solid run to record their highest finish of the 2006 season - a 16th place showing – at Texas Motor Speedway.

“That’s how we needed to rebound after some tough races,” said Cooper. “We know we have the talent and ability to be successful. Now we just need to keep working hard to turn our season around and get our cars finishing up front where they should be.”

The weekend started off on a very encouraging note, with a fifth-place qualifying effort. Green was the highest qualifier among the Busch Series regulars.

“Man what a blast it was to drive my car in qualifying,” Green said. “It was an awesome effort by my team. They were dead-on with the balance and adjustments we needed from our practice sessions.”

At the start of the race, Green indicated that the track conditions were “slick, slick, slick,” and that the car needed rear grip and help with the entry through the center. The team was able to make its first pit stop on lap 57 when many drivers in the field came in under green flag conditions to make adjustments.

Kleenex Team in Texas“That’s probably the worst scenario to have at Texas with the speeds we run,” Green said. “With the amount of sliding of the rear tires we had, we still could run decent times. That made me confident enough to know that if we could fix the problem, we could be right there with them all race.”

The first caution fell on lap 82 and the No. 27 Brewco team pitted again to correct the tight conditions that Green was reporting. By lap 126, Green was in 17th place on the lead lap.

The crew worked hard all afternoon with fast pit stops to make the necessary adjustments to the car. The No. 27 car pit once again on lap 153, changing four tires and topping off with fuel in the hopes that they would win the battle for track position while the race leaders would have to make another pit stop late in the race. The adjustment efforts paid off, as Green reported that the car was “the best it had ever been,” but unfortunately for him and the No. 27 Brewco crew, just a few laps later the race came to an end. The No. 27 Brewco car finished in 16th place.

“Stewart never gave up adjusting and adjusting,” Green said. “That’s the mark of a good leader. He got my car the best it was all day at the last run, which is what we always want. The problem was that there were several cautions over the final 50 laps. That hurt our chances to gain spots.

“I’m proud of my team for never giving up and adjusting our car throughout the weekend and especially during the race,” Green continued. “Now we can build on this weekend with some confidence.

“After the Texas race, we now feel like we are inching back closer to where we need to be,” Green said. “We can use all the data we’re collecting after the races in California, Las Vegas, Atlanta and now Texas. What we’re learning will make us a better and stronger team at all the tracks on the schedule. Stewart and I very are excited about the rest of the races coming up.

“The mark of a championship team is weathering the tough times like we’ve had at the start of this season, and building, learning and putting in place all we’ve learned to date,” Green said. “We are determined to turn our season around. Here we come Nashville!”

Next for Green and the No. 27 team is the Pepsi 300 at Nashville Superspeedway on Saturday April 15. The green flag drops at 4:05 pm EST and race coverage begins at 4 pm on FX.
