Biffle and Brewco
Record Top-Five Finish
in Las Vegas
LAS
VEGAS, NV (March 12)-
Greg Biffle, driver of
the #66 Duraflame Ford
Taurus, started 10th
and finished 5th
in the Sam's Town 300
at Las Vegas Motor
Speedway. En route to
his second top-ten
finish of 2005, Biffle
led eleven laps late
in the race.
After a
pair of disappointing
finishes, Team
Duraflame headed to
Las Vegas Motor
Speedway looking to
rebound and gain
valuable momentum
early in the season.
Crew chief Newt Moore
explained, "We have
had a car capable of
winning every week.
Greg and Jorge have
both lead laps, but
luck has not been our
side. This weekend is
no different. We
tested very well, and
feel like we have a
shot to win. Our
point's position might
not show it, but we
have been very, very
competitive this
season."
After
posting the fourth
fastest time in
practice, Greg Biffle
and his Brewco
Motorsports teammates
held high expectations
prior to Busch Pole
qualifying. Having
won the pole position
in Mexico City a week
earlier, Team Brewco
felt confident they
could win a second in
as many weeks.
Unfortunately, an
early draw in the
qualifying lineup
would cost Biffle
valuable time, as the
track temperature
dropped significantly
throughout the lengthy
time session. Despite
the unfortunate draw,
Biffle managed to
qualify the #66
Duraflame Ford in
tenth position.
"We had
a top-three car, but
the early draw killed
us. I was a little
loose in turns three
and four, but other
than that the lap was
perfect. I'm not sure
why they scheduled
qualifying this late
in the day. The guys
that went late had a
huge advantage- so I
guess I'm glad we
didn't fall back any
further than we did,"
Biffle added.
With
qualifying behind them
and the car securely
impounded in the
NASCAR Busch Series
garage, Team Brewco
anxiously awaited the
start of the Sam's
Town 300. At the drop
of the green flag,
Biffle quickly moved
into the ninth
position. Within a
few laps, the 2002 NBS
champion radioed, "I'm
tight in the center
and it's making me
really loose off of
the turn. We've got
to do something."
Fortunately for Biffle
the caution flag fell
on lap forty. Running
in ninth place, Biffle
followed the leaders
to pit road for his
first stop of the
day. Team Brewco
changed four tires and
made a major wedge
adjustment before
sending their driver
back to racing action
in ninth place.
The
changes were
noticeable as Biffle
raced his way into the
top-five by lap
fifty-three. When
asked how the car was
handling Biffle said,
"It's a lot better,
but we need to go a
little further on the
changes. I'm getting
killed off of the
turns."
Team
Brewco made their
second stop of the day
on lap eighty-six.
Biffle restarted in
ninth place after
taking on four tires
and another wedge
adjustment. With lap
times as quick as the
leader, Biffle managed
to work his way back
to the front of the
field. As the caution
flag fell on lap one
hundred and six, the
decision was made to
stay out. As the rest
of the field headed to
pit road, Biffle would
restart the event in
first place. With a
strong car underneath
him, Biffle managed to
lead eleven laps
before giving up the
top-spot to Carl
Edwards on lap one
hundred and
twenty-two. As his
tires continued to
fade, Biffle fell back
to sixth place, before
making a stop on lap
one hundred and
fifty-seven. Despite
a series of late-race
cautions, Biffle was
able to hold onto a
top-five finish.
"That
race was a lot of
fun. Newt (crew chief
Moore) did a great job
adjusting on the car
all day. We started
off really tight and
by the end of the
race, we were as fast
as the leader. We
might have gone a
little too far on the
last stop, but I don't
have any complaints.
We led some laps and
had a great point's
day. We'll get 'em in
Atlanta," Biffle added
after posting his
first top-five finish
of 2005.
Next
up, Team Brewco heads
to Atlanta Motor
Speedway for the
Aaron's 312 on
Saturday, March 19th.
FX and PRN will
provide live coverage
of the event beginning
at 2:30pm ET.
