Biffle and
Brewco Settle
for Second Place
Finish
BRISTOL, TN
(August 26,
2005) - For the
second weekend
in a row, Greg
Biffle had the
car to beat but
ultimately had
to settle for a
runner-up
finish. Biffle,
driver of the
#66 Duraflame
Ford, started
fourth and
finished second
in the Food City
250 at Bristol
Motor Speedway.
After several
lengthy rain
delays, Biffle
found himself in
a
green-white-checkered
shootout with
Ryan Newman.
Despite his best
effort, Biffle
could not get
around Newman
who successfully
protected the
bottom groove.
As a result of
the finish, Team
Brewco #66 moved
from seventh to
sixth in NASCAR
Busch Series
owners'
standings.
Biffle, who has
competed in 19
of 26 NBS events
this season,
remains 13th
in series'
driver's
standings.
With the threat
of rain growing
exponentially,
Greg Biffle and
his Brewco
Motorsports
teammates knew
they were in for
a long night.
With a car
strong enough to
win the race,
the group was
more than eager
to get the race
in as
scheduled. At
the drop of the
green flag,
Biffle quickly
settled into a
comfortable
rhythm. "I'm
just cruising
right now. I
don't want to
get caught up in
anything stupid,
we'll be just
fine," Biffle
radioed while
running in fifth
place. With the
threat of
showers
increasing,
Biffle headed to
pit road on lap
65. In what was
to be their
first and last
stop of the
night, Biffle
took on four
tires and a
minor chassis
adjustment to
help tighten up
the #66 Ford.
Biffle would
restart the race
in 12th
place as several
cars elected not
to pit.
Within several
laps of their
pit stop, the
skies opened up,
forcing the
field to make a
detour down pit
road. With an
hour and a half,
the track was
dry enough to
resume racing.
By lap 101, the
2002 Busch
Series champion
found himself
back inside the
top-five. After
checking the
radar several
times, crew
chief Newt Moore
decided not to
pit. "Well, we
might be in
trouble if thing
goes green, but
the radar
doesn't look
good and we have
to assume that
it's going to
rain again.
It's a bit of a
gamble but this
car is good
enough to stay
up front for a
while," Moore
added.
By lap 142,
Biffle had moved
into 3rd
place, trailing
race leader Ryan
Newman and
second place
driver Kasey
Kahne. After
several more
brief rain
showers, it
appeared as
though the Food
City would come
down to the
wire. On lap
219, Kahne spun
as he attempted
to pass leader
Ryan Newman. In
a heads up move,
Biffle barely
avoided the
spinning car and
ultimately moved
into second
place. Caution
after caution,
restart after
restart, Biffle
held off a hard
charging third
place driver,
Kevin Harvick.
On lap 243,
Biffle made his
move and at one
point got door
to door with
Newman only to
have the caution
flag fall on lap
235. With only
a handful of
laps remaining,
Biffle poised
himself for a
green-white-checkered
finish. Despite
his best
efforts, Biffle
was ultimately
unable to pass
Newman who
checked up on
the final
restart. Biffle
would cross the
finish line in
second place for
the second
consecutive
weekend.
"Ryan had a
great car. The
Duraflame car
ran really good
tonight. He was
just protecting
bottom and
that's Bristol;
that's what
you've got to
do. He was
protecting the
bottom quite a
bit, and we were
pretty much
faster than he
was, and so was
Kevin Harvick
behind me. He
was putting a
lot of pressure
on me, but I
couldn't go
anywhere with
Ryan Newman
protecting the
bottom. It was
a good night for
us. We wanted
to finish better
than what we
did. Kevin let
me go a few
times there. I
didn't see him
beside me on
that restart,
but that's
Bristol," Biffle
added after the
race.
Next up, Team
Brewco #66 heads
to California
Speedway for the
Ameriquest 300
on Saturday,
September 3rd.
NBC and MRN will
provide live
coverage of the
event beginning
at 8:00pm ET.
