Biffle
and Brewco
Record
Sixth
Second
Place
Finish of
Season
KANSAS
CITY, KS
(October
8) -
Despite
leading a
race high
136 laps,
Greg
Biffle and
his Brewco
Motorsports
teammates
had to
settle for
a second
place
finish in
Saturday's
United Way
300 at
Kansas
Speedway.
Biffle,
driver of
the #66
SUBWAY®
Ford,
dominated
most of
the 200
lap race,
but
ultimately
found
himself in
a heated
last lap
battle
with
eventual
race
winner
Kasey
Kahne.
Biffle
would
cross the
finish
line
0.30-seconds
behind
Kahne, the
fifth
closest
finish in
Busch
Series
history.
The finish
was
Biffle's
sixth
runner-up
finish of
the
season.
Despite
being
disappointed
by the
outcome of
the race,
Team
Brewco
moved from
sixth to
fifth in
NASCAR
Busch
Series
owner's
standings.
Crew chief
Newt Moore
took a
gamble
prior to
Saturday's
United Way
300 at
Kansas
Speedway.
Unloading
a car that
had never
been on
the track
is always
a risk
especially
when the
alternative
was to
race a car
that has
posted
four
second
place
finishes
in 2005.
"We were
tired of
finishing
second, we
had to try
something.
This car
is modeled
after the
other one,
with a few
minor body
changes.
It's
always a
risk to
race an
untested
car, but
we have a
lot of
faith in
our body
hanger and
fab shop,"
Moore
added.
Despite a
few
worries in
practice,
Moore and
Biffle
worked
diligently
to get the
#66
SUBWAY®
Ford
dialed in
prior to
Busch Pole
qualifying.
"There
were
definitely
a few bugs
to be
worked
out, but
by the end
of
practice I
think we
have this
car right
where we
want it,"
Biffle
added. In
one of
their
better
qualifying
efforts of
the
season,
Team
Brewco
managed to
secure the
seventh
place
starting
spot, with
Brewco
teammate
David
Green
locking in
the sixth
position.
At the
drop of
the green
flag,
Biffle
quickly
realized
he had a
fast sled
underneath
him.
Patiently
knocking
off
position
after
position,
the 2002
NBS
champion
worked his
way to
third
place by
lap 29.
Biffle
made his
first pit
stop of
the day on
lap 30.
In third
and out
second, he
returned
to the
race with
four fresh
tires and
a freed up
racecar.
The
changes
proved
successful,
as Biffle
took the
lead from
Martin
Truex Jr.
on lap 45.
From that
point
forward
there was
no looking
back,
Biffle
quickly
built an
impressive
six second
led over
second
place and
showed no
signs of
letting
up. After
a pair of
lighting
fast pit
stops,
Biffle
found
himself in
the lead
but
lacking
the fuel
necessary
to make it
to the
end.
Hoping for
a caution
flag with
twenty to
thirty
laps
remaining,
Biffle
would have
to settle
for a
final pit
stop on
lap 182.
When asked
what
changes to
make on
the pit
stop,
Biffle
radioed,
"I think
we have to
take four
tires. We
will be a
sitting
duck if we
don't."
With their
game plan
in tack,
Team
Brewco
watched as
several
cars
stayed out
and others
took on
two
tires.
When all
was said
and done,
Biffle
would
restart
the race
in eighth
place with
a handful
of laps
remaining.
Slicing
and dicing
his way
through
the field,
Biffle
worked his
way to
second
place on
lap 193,
only to
have the
caution
flag fall
on lap
194. Once
again, the
stage was
set for a
green-white-checkered
finish.
With his
teammates
anxiously
watching
the final
shootout
from atop
pit wall,
Biffle
inched
past Kasey
Kahne's
door on
lap 199.
Unfortunately,
as the
top-two
came off
of turn
four on
the final
lap, Kahne
strong
armed
Biffle
ultimately
capturing
the win by
a mere
0.30-seconds.
"The last
couple of
laps Kasey
did what
he had to
do. He
tried to
protect
the bottom
and my car
wasn't
that good
up top. I
should
have
looked in
the mirror
and saw if
I had some
room
behind me.
I should
have tried
the top. I
probably
could have
beat him
up top
pretty
easy I
guess. My
mistake,
though. I
should
have done
that, but
I knew I
could move
him off
the bottom
and get a
run on him
and that's
what I
did, and
then he
drove it
in the
corner
right on
my
right-rear
quarter
panel and
sucked me
sideways,
which
that's
pretty
brave to
do that
because
usually
you wreck
two people
when you
do that.
But he
knew I had
a good car
so he did
what he
had to do
there,"
Biffle
added
after
posting
his sixth
second
place
finish of
the
season.
"So we
went back
down the
backstretch
dead even
again and
the lap
before
that
'getting
into
three,' he
kept down
the
straightaway.
I had a
run on him
and he
blocked me
all the
way to the
bottom.
It's just
tough to
finish
second and
have a car
like that.
Maybe I
should
have taken
two
tires."
Next up,
Team
Brewco
heads to
Lowe's
Motor
Speedway
for the
Dollar
General
300 on
Friday,
October 14th.
TNT and
PRN will
provide
live
coverage
of the
event
beginning
at 8:00pm
EDT.
