JOLIET, IL (July 9)
- Despite slight
controversy and a
little bit of heart
break Greg Biffle,
driver of the #66
Royal Office
Products Ford,
recorded a solid
second place finish
in the USG Durock
300 at Chicagoland
Speedway. Biffle,
who was making his
15th
start of the season
in the NASCAR Busch
Series, made a late
race charge to the
front of the field,
but ultimately ran
out of laps as Kevin
Harvick recorded his
second win of the
season. As a result
of the finish,
Biffle moved from 11th
to 9th in
NBS driver's
standings. Team
Brewco #66 gained
some ground in
series' owners'
standings, moving
from eighth to
seventh.
As
one of the hottest
drivers in NASCAR,
Greg Biffle already
has a lot of
pressure on him to
perform week in and
week out. Needless
to say this weekend
was no different.
With new sponsor
Royal Office
Products on board
the 2002 Busch
Series champion felt
a little extra
pressure.
"Throughout my
racing career I have
been very fortunate
to win a lot of
races- especially
for new sponsors.
It seems like
anytime we change
paint schemes or
sign a new sponsor I
end up winning the
race. That's a lot
of pressure.
Hopefully I can come
through once again,"
Biffle added before
Friday morning's
practice session.
Unloading a racecar
that has a worst
finish of sixth in
three starts this
season, Greg Biffle
and his Brewco
Motorsports
teammates held high
expectations prior
to this weekend's
USG Durock 300.
While the first and
only practice
session of the day
might not have gone
as smoothly as
expected, the young
and eager team
remained
optimistic. "I
really don't think
we will qualify that
well- probably
top-20. My main
focus is getting the
car to drive well in
race conditions, I'm
not too concerned
with the time
trials," Biffle said
before Friday
afternoon's Busch
Pole qualifying.
Despite having an
early draw, Biffle
put together two
solid laps, good
enough for a sixth
place starting spot.
At
the drop of the
green flag, Biffle
quickly showed the
rest of the field
that he was a
contender. When
asked how his car
was handling, Biffle
radioed, "I'm a
little tight- but I
think we might have
something for
them." Crew chief
Newt Moore got his
first opportunity to
adjust the #66 Ford
on lap 32. In third
and out fifth,
Biffle returned to
the race with a
"freed up" racecar
and four fresh
tires. While the
change helped
initially, the
"tight" condition
returned within a
few laps. Despite
the handling
difficulties, Biffle
held his own in the
top-five for much of
the race.
Team
Brewco made their
third stop of the
day on lap 114.
Crew chief Moore
elected to bolt on
four "scuff" tires,
saving his last set
of stickers for
later in the race.
When asked how his
car felt Biffle
enthusiastically
said, "this thing is
perfect, don't
change a thing."
Poised to make his
final charge towards
the front, Biffle
patiently passed car
after car. As the
caution flag fell on
lap 153, Biffle and
Moore made the call
to pit one last
time. With four
brand-new tires and
less than thirty
laps to go, Biffle
set his sights on
the race leader.
While he did manage
to race his way to
second place, Biffle
ultimately ran out
time as Kevin
Harvick crossed the
finish line first on
lap 200. The second
place finish was
Biffle's 12th
top-ten and 8th
top-five finish of
the season- pretty
impressive
considering he has
only competed in 15
of 18 events.
"Obviously I'm a
little disappointed
with that finish.
We got held up there
late in the race and
lost some track
position. I was
pretty hot about
some of the things
that happened out
there today, but all
in all it was a
pretty clean race.
Scuffed tires were
definitely the way
to go. That last
set of sticker tires
we put on really
hurt us.
Nevertheless, it was
a pretty good day.
There were a lot of
good cars in this
race, so we can
leave with our heads
held high," Biffle
added after
finishing second in
the USG Durock 300
at Chicagoland
Speedway.
Next
up, Team Brewco #66
heads to the New
Hampshire
International
Speedway for the New
England 200 on
Saturday, July 16th.
TNT and MRN will
provide live
coverage of the
event beginning at
3:00pm ET.
