Concord, NC (May 29, 2006) – Persistence proved key for Brewco Motorsports’ Duraflame team this weekend at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. The team was forced to go to a backup car following an incident during first practice. When the race began, the Duraflame Ford looked strong but radio issues soon made the evening a challenge for Scott Wimmer and the entire crew. After a weekend of obstacles, the Brewco Motorsports crew salvaged a 25th place finish.
The right front tire of the Duraflame Ford let go early in first practice, forcing the crew to pull out the backup car for the first time this season. “I don’t know what happened,” said Wimmer. “I turned into the corner and the car just went straight into the wall.” The No. 66 crew had just one hour between practices to prepare the backup Duraflame Ford and they finished just in time. Wimmer was strong in final practice but went on to qualify 38th.
Shortly after the start of the CARQUEST Auto Parts 300, Wimmer reported that the Duraflame Ford had gotten incredibly tight. Following adjustments during a round of green flag pit stops, Wimmer began moving up through the field. Wimmer was running 30th around lap 80 when his radio stopped working. The crew could not hear him and he could not hear the crew until they were able to switch radios on lap 148.
At this point, Wimmer said the Duraflame Ford was still a little tight but overall pretty good. Just 36 laps later, Wimmer’s radio failed again. Driving without the guidance of his spotter or crew chief, Wimmer brought the Duraflame Ford home in 25th.
“That was a tough weekend,” said Wimmer. “I can’t begin to tell you how hard these guys worked getting the backup car ready in time for final practice. The Duraflame Ford was pretty good. We were real tight there in the first half of the race. Not being able to talk to Newt Moore or hear my spotter made for a hard night but we made the best of it. All things considered, we could’ve had a much worse finish than we got. It isn’t at all representative of what this team is capable of. I can’t wait to get to Dover next week. That’s a track where I’ve won before and the Brewco Motorsports teams are always strong. It should be a good day for us.”
