Darlington, SC (May 15, 2006) – Scott Wimmer looked as if he was going to conquer the track “too tough to tame” during Friday night’s Diamond Hill Plywood 200, but the Yard-Man Ford ended up in wrong place at the wrong time. After qualifying 7th and running in the top-10 for the majority of the evening, Wimmer was caught up in a lapped traffic wreck with just 22 laps remaining in the race. The Yard-Man Ford suffered rear end damage and went on to finish 26th.
Wimmer struggled with a tight car in practice but steadily improved and ended up 12th fastest in happy hour. The Yard-Man Ford went on to qualify 7th; Wimmer’s highest starting position of the season.
Early in the race, the Yard-Man Ford was too loose for Wimmer’s liking. The Yard-Man crew went to work on the No. 66 Ford Fusion during the first two pit stops of the evening. After multiple air pressure and track bar adjustments, Wimmer reported that the car “felt really good – a lot better than earlier.”
Wimmer was running 10th on lap 125 when Ryan Newman spun directly in front of him and the Yard-Man Ford had nowhere to go. Wimmer made two trips down pit road for repairs on the right rear. Wimmer restarted 31st and fought his way up to 26th when the checkered flag flew.
“That is incredibly disappointing,” said Wimmer. “The Yard-Man Ford Fusion was so good tonight. You expect guys to race hard toward the end of the night but you don’t expect it from lapped traffic. We just had nowhere to go. I hate it for Yard-Man and Newt Moore and all of the Brewco Motorsports guys. We’re making a ton of progress though. Each race we’re together we get stronger and stronger. We’ll be back in Charlotte.”
Wimmer returns to the Yard-Man Ford Fusion May 27th at Lowe’s Motor Speedway for the Carquest Auto Parts 300.
