Madison, IL (July 31, 2006) – It was a weekend of season-bests for Scott Wimmer, Brewco Motorsports and the Yard-Man Racing team. The 6th place finish was the best of the year for Wimmer and the third top-10 in the last four races for the No. 66 team. Wimmer’s Brewco Motorsports teammate David Green also had his best run of the season, finishing 7th in the Kleenex® Ford.
The Yard-Man Ford was tight during first and most of second practice. Toward the end of final practice, Wimmer told his team “not great but we’re getting there.” With temperatures in the high 90s and the heat index well over 100 degrees, the Brewco Motorsports crew worked for hours to get the Yard-Man Ford ready for qualifying and the race. Their efforts paid off and Wimmer qualified 12th.
After a 90 minute rain delay, the Busch Silver Celebration 250 was set to begin. Wimmer quickly moved to the front and was running in the top-five by lap 22. Wimmer was happy with his car, only complaining of it being a “little tight but not real bad.”
A long green flag run began on lap 42 and the Yard-Man crew got ready for green flag pit stops. Most of the leaders had pitted and Wimmer was in the lead when he began to come down pit road for service on lap 109. Just as he was entering pit road, the caution flew. Wimmer quickly got back onto the track and pitted under caution on the following lap. Most of the leaders were caught one lap down and Wimmer restarted 3rd.
With 60 laps to go and Wimmer running 4th, the Yard-Man Ford started to get tight. The crew adjusted on the car during the last pit stop on lap 185. Wimmer held on to finish 6th for his and the team’s best finish of the season.
Wimmer and the Yard-Man pit crew won the Checkers/Rally’s Double Drive Thru Challenge Award for spending the least amount of time on pit road during the race. Wimmer also received the Goody’s Headache Powder Award, the Mobil 1 Command Performance Driver of the Race Award and the WIX Filters Lap Leader Award.
“We had a top-five car and we got behind on our adjustments a little bit and the car got too tight,” said Wimmer. “We lost a lot of track position there on that one run, and we tried to take two tires at the end to get some back, and it just got tighter. It’s not a bad day, and I think we definitely had a shot at a top-five and we kind of let that slip away from us. But, we’re building some momentum; that’s two top-10s in this car in a row, and I’ve got the last five races of the year in it, so I’m real excited.”
