Ft. Worth, TX (April 10, 2006) – Hopes were high for Scott Wimmer and the Duraflame Ford heading into the O’Reilly 300 weekend at Texas Motor Speedway. After a successful first race together earlier in the season, Newt Moore and the No. 66 team were looking forward to having Wimmer back in the driver’s seat. The Duraflame Ford was fast all weekend and despite a 31st starting position, Wimmer gave Brewco Motorsports a season-high 9th place finish.
The Duraflame Ford was fast from the time it unloaded. Wimmer posted the 10th fastest time in final practice and said the car “felt really good.” Qualifying did not go as planned, however, as an early draw and changing track temperature led to a 31st starting spot for the Duraflame Ford.
Wimmer would not stay in the back of the field for long. He quietly made his way through the field and was up to 13th on lap 55 when green flag pit stops began cycling through the field. The Duraflame Ford was “a little free” when Wimmer came down pit road for the first time on lap 63. A slight air pressure adjustment and four fresh tires and Wimmer was back on the track in 15th place.
When the first caution flew on lap 82, Wimmer reported that the Duraflame Ford had become “tight off.” The Duraflame crew made an air pressure and track bar adjustment and got Wimmer back on the track in 13th, picking up two positions.
Wimmer continued to gain spots and broke into the top 10 on lap 115. When multiple cautions flew during the last 50 laps of the race, crew chief Newt Moore made the call to stay out and keep track position. Wimmer was shown as high as 7th during the late stages of the afternoon and brought the Duraflame Ford home in 9th place, giving Brewco Motorsports its first top-10 of 2006.
"That was a real good race,” said Wimmer. “That's my second race in Clarence Brewer's car and I can't thank him enough. We had a lot of problems on restarts and we couldn't get going and we didn't need those last couple of laps or otherwise I think we could have had a top-seven. I'm real happy for Duraflame and everybody on this team, and I'm glad to be in a Ford. Overall it was a great weekend for this team.”
Wimmer returns to Brewco Motorsports and the No. 66 Duraflame Ford Fusion May 27th at Lowe’s Motor Speedway.
